In week 12 of the series, Daryl Carter discusses two bets at 10/1 and 12/1, drawing conclusions about each division and answering questions.
The Mania Around Mundi: Is it Justified?
- 10/1 for “Turners”
- 12/1 for the Champion Hurdle
Novices in Hurdles
I recommended keeping an open mind regarding the form of the Champion Bumper from week one. Romeo Coolio, who finished second, is the only one from this race whose chances for the Supreme Novice Hurdle are below 25/1. Although he shows good potential, I’m doubtful he’ll become a 150-160 rated horse.
As of January, candidates for the Supreme Novice look weak. Kopek Des Bordes is a horse to keep an eye on despite his less-than-ideal debut race.
Salvator Mundi: A New Favorite?
Salvator Mundi is now at 4/1 after his victory in the Grade 2 Moscow Flyer. His win sparked some debate: while he didn’t show remarkable speed, his result was respectable considering the difficulties he faced. However, his future potential could be limited given his unpolished form.
His time in the race doesn’t justify a high rating, but given that this was his first start in 242 days under tough conditions, there is room for optimism. He could become a favorite for the Supreme Novice Hurdle.
English Horses in “Turners”
At the start of the season, it wasn’t expected that English horses would dominate the Turners Novice Hurdle. Horses like The New Lion and Potters Charm are too short on the odds. The JP McManus horse, The New Lion, raises questions. Caid D’authie looks like the most obvious contender.
Novices in Chases
The Champion and Arkle have already gained clarity. Sir Gino looks like a horse capable of breaking records, but Majborough is also a contender. In the Brown Advisory, Ballyburn deserves attention, as he should be able to cover the 3-mile distance. It’s not impossible for him to secure a victory in this field.
Open Hurdles
The Champion Hurdle is still in the spotlight, with Constitution Hill as the main favorite, though doubts about his form remain. Anzadam at 12/1 is an interesting choice — he could be a serious contender for Constitution Hill if the latter doesn’t perform.
